David Sobel was among just 30 finalists out of 972 teachers from Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, and Will counties who were nominated for the prestigious 2009 Golden Apple Awards for Excellence in Teaching in pre-kindergarten through third grade.

 Two award selection committee members observed Sobel in his classroom and interviewed his principal and selected colleagues, parents, and students before determining the winners. The 10 Golden Apple Award winners will be honored at an awards ceremony in September that will become a one-hour, prime-time special to be aired on WTTW/Channel 11 Chicago.

 Sobel has been involved in the local community for a number of years and recognizes the important of a quality Physical Education program, that fosters a healthier child, and a healthy community.
